Ouida (Maria Louise Ramé), 1839-1908
The writer Ouida, so called for the way she pronounced her given name, Louise, as a child, was a British author of sensational fiction, historical romance, and children's books. She permanently moved to Italy when she was 32.
Her work blends sensationalism and romanticism with social commentary. One of her most famous novels is Under Two Flags, which tells the story of British and French colonists in Algeria. Her novel Puck offers social commentary from the perspective of a dog.
